The fires that the last heat wave has left in the country have once again shown the importance of raising awareness in fire prevention, since, according to environmental organizations, human action is behind 96% of forest fires.
Among the different social motivations that cause fires, from Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food point out that the use of fire in agricultural (35%) and livestock (20%) practices causes the majority of forest fires. The rest comes from a wide range of actions, such as vandalism (4%), vegetation control (3%) or the use of machinery (4%).
However, there is a very common and widespread practice that causes, according to the Ministry, 3.3% of fires: throw butts on the ground. This action also raises other associated problems, as pointed out by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
Danger, dirt and fire
“Throwing a cigarette butt out of the window puts the safety of other road users at risk, especially that of motorists and cyclists; it can cause fires and dirty the roads and gutters,” recalls the entity through its social networks.

For this reason, this gesture is sanctioned with an economic fine of 200 euros and with the withdrawal of four points on the driver’s license. And if we have the misfortune that our cigarette butt is indeed the cause of a fire, the repercussions are drastically hardened.
As warned by the Civil Guard, this succession of events can cause the smoker involved to go to prison. “If a forest fire occurs as a consequence of the action, it could end in 6 years in jail“, indicates the security body.
