A few days before the beginning of July, the General Directorate of Traffic has already planned what the security device will be like with which they intend to avoid the greatest number of traffic accidents possible during the Summer Vacation. According to the estimates managed by the entity, it is expected that in the months of July and August there will be a total of 93 million long-distance journeyswhich would mean an increase of 2.4% compared to the previous year.
In the same way, it is expected that the bulk of the trips will be divided into four periods: two output operations (from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 July and from Friday 29 July to Monday 1 August), a return operation (from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 August) and a special operation (from Friday 12 to Monday 15 August).
Among other security measures, the DGT has announced that it will increase surveillance of speeding and distractions through the use of mobile radars “embarked both in labeled and camouflaged cars of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard”. “For distractions, Traffic has installed 29 new surveillance cameras of the use of mobile phones and seat belts until reaching a total of 245″, the organization points out.
Along with these measures, the DGT has emphasized remembering the new rules of the road that will affect drivers this summer. These, although they were approved in Congress on November 2, 2021, did not enter into force until March 21, 2022. Therefore, this will be the first summer in which the new measures are valid.

– Mobile: 6 points will be deducted for using or holding mobile phone devices while driving.
– Safety belt and protection elements. 4 points will be withdrawn for not using, or not using properly, the seat belt, child restraint systems, helmet and other mandatory protection elements.
– Speed: Eliminates the possibility that cars and motorcycles can exceed the speed limits by 20 km/h on conventional roads when overtaking other vehicles.
– Alcohol. Underage drivers who drive any vehicle may not circulate with an alcohol level greater than 0.0, both in blood and in exhaled air. It is an infraction that does not change, it continues to be classified as very serious.
– cyclists. On roads with more than one lane in each direction, it is mandatory to completely change lanes when overtaking cyclists or mopeds. In addition, 6 points to deduct when overtaking endangering or hindering cyclists without leaving the mandatory minimum separation of 1.5 m. It is also prohibited to stop or park on bike lanes or on cycle paths.
– Recovery of card points. After 2 years without committing infractions that deduct points, the driver recovers his initial balance of points.
